Description of the METEOROID ORBITS bundle V1.0 =============================================== Bundle Generation Date: 2020-06-12 Peer Review: 2007 Asteroid Review, 2007-05-24 Discipline node: Small Bodies Node Content description based on the data set catalog file description for the PDS3 version, EAR-A-VARGBDET-5-METORB-V1.0 ===================================================================================================================== Note: for PDS3 data sets migrated to PDS4, the following text is taken verbatim from the data set description and confidence level note of the PDS3 data set catalog file. In these cases, some details may not be correct as a description of the PDS4 bundle. Meteoroid orbital data from twelve photographic, TV system, and radar meteoroid surveys have been collected from the International Astronomical Union Meteor Data Center (IAU MDC) by Duncan Steel and reviewed and discussed in Steel (1996). The twelve surveys represented here are summarized below. For more details see Steel (1996). Optical Surveys --------------- Harvard Photographic Survey (Precise Reduction) - This survey was carried out at the Harvard Station in New Mexico. The file harphot.tab contains 1245 orbits obtained by the more precise but time-consuming 'precise' reduction method, covering the time period 1936-1959. Limited resources precluded analyzing all orbits by the 'precise' method, so the remainder were analyzed by the 'graphical' method and included in the next file. To validate the graphical method, some orbits were analyzed with both methods and appear in both files. See Steel (1996) for further information. Harvard Photographic Survey (Graphical Reduction) - The file hargraph.tab contains 2529 orbits obtained from the Harvard Photographic Survey by the less precise 'graphical' reduction method, covering the time period 1952-1954. Prairie Network and MORP - The file fireball.tab contains 554 orbits from two fireball surveys, the Prairie Network and the Meteorite Observation and Recovery Project (MORP), covering the time period 1964-1983. Soviet Photographic - The file sovphot.tab contains 1111 orbits from small-camera programs carried out in Dushanbe, Odessa, and Kiev in the former Soviet Union from 1940-1983. Canadian TV Faint Meteors - The file ontariotv.tab contains 531 orbits from two TV meteor programs carried out in Ontario frm 1976 through 1982. Radar Surveys ------------- Adelaide 1960-1961 Survey - The file ade6061.tab contains 2092 orbits from the 1960-1961 Adelaide Radar Meteor Survey. Adelaide 1968-1969 Survey - The file ade6869.tab contains 1667 orbits from the 1968-1969 Adelaide Radar Meteor Survey. Harvard 1961-1965 Survey - The file har6165.tab contains 19,327 orbits from the Harvard Radar Meteor Project (HRMP) at Havana, Illinois from 1961 through 1965. Harvard 1968-1969 Survey - The file har6869.tab contains 19,818 orbits from the HRMP from 1968-1969. Obninsk Survey - The file obninsk.tab contains 9358 orbits from the Obninsk Survey in the former Soviet Union from 1967-1968. Kharkov Survey - The file kharkov.tab contains 5317 orbits from the Kharkov Survey in the former Soviet Union in 1975. Mogadisho Survey - The file mogadisho.tab contains 5328 orbits from the Soviet Equatorial Expedition near Mogadisho, Somalia in 1969-1970. Data Parameters --------------- The data files all have a common format and include orbit numbers within each file, time of observation, orbital elements, ecliptic longitude, right ascension, and declination of the radiant, and the derived velocity at infinity. Note that orbit numbers are not unique within some files. References ---------- Steel, Duncan (1996) Meteoroid orbits. Space Science Reviews 78, 507-553. Lindblad, B. A. and Steel, D. I.
