Dawn Vesta Gravity Science Derived Data Bundle Readme Introduction ============ This document contains information pertaining to the Dawn Vesta Gravity Science Derived Data Bundle. This bundle contains derived gravity data for the Dawn Radio Science Gravity Field Determination experiments during the Vesta encounter, including spherical harmonics and map data. This bundle is organized into several collections, including: Dawn Vesta ASCII Spherical Harmonic Model Data Collection (urn:nasa:pds:dawn-rss-der-vesta:data-shadr), Dawn Vesta Binary Spherical Harmonic Model Data Collection (urn:nasa:pds:dawn-rss-der-vesta:data-shbdr), Dawn Vesta Gravity Radio Science Digital Maps Data Collection (urn:nasa:pds:dawn-rss-der-vesta:maps), and document. PDS4 documentation is all XML. There is an XML label for every product in the archive. Dawn Vesta ASCII Spherical Harmonic Models Data Collection ========================================================== This collection includes ASCII spherical harmonic model of Vesta's gravity field generated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; these results were derived from raw radio tracking data from the Dawn raw radio science data set (DAWN-A-RSS-VEGR-V1.0), observations made using the Dawn spacecraft and Earth-based receiving stations of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). This collection also includes a new gravity field product, JGDWN_VES26J_SHA. This product was not in the original PDS3 data set but has been added in this bundle in 2025. A covariance table for the VES26J_SHA model, JGDWN_VES26J_SHB, has also been added to the SHBDR collection in this bundle. Paper reference for the new gravity model product: Park, R.S., Ermakov, A.I., Konopliv, A.S. et al. A small core in Vesta inferred from Dawn’s observations. Nat Astron 9, 824–834 (2025). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41550-025-02533-7 Dawn Vesta Binary Spherical Harmonic Models Data Collection =========================================================== This collection includes binary spherical harmonic model of Vesta's gravity field generated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; these results were derived from raw radio tracking data from the Dawn raw radio science data set (DAWN-A-RSS-VEGR-V1.0), observations made using the Dawn spacecraft and Earth-based receiving stations of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). This collection also includes a new gravity field product, JGDWN_VES26J_SHB. This product was not in the original PDS3 data set and but has been added in this bundle in 2025. Paper reference for the new gravity model product: Park, R.S., Ermakov, A.I., Konopliv, A.S. et al. A small core in Vesta inferred from Dawn’s observations. Nat Astron 9, 824–834 (2025). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41550-025-02533-7 Dawn Vesta Gravity Radio Science Digital Maps Data Collection ============================================================= This collection includes gravity maps generated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; these results were derived from raw radio tracking data from the Dawn raw radio science data set (DAWN-A-RSS-VEGR-V1.0), observations made using the Dawn spacecraft and Earth-based receiving stations of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). This collection's PDS4 map products include value-added updates to upperleft_corner_x/y and pixel_resolution_x/y, derived from proper cartographic parameters, provided by Trent Hare (PDS Imaging Node). See the accompanying figure equirectangular_map_projection_PDS4.pdf, in the document collection, for the method and explanation; these values replace those in the earlier PDS3 labels. Archive Lineage (PDS3 to PDS4) ============================== This is a PDS4 archive of the following PDS data set: DAWN-A-RSS-5-VEGR-V2.0 This data set was originally archived under PDS3 in the following volume: DWNVGRS_2 PDS4 takes advantage of the network capabilities that allow archives to be distributed. As a result, some of the documents and metadata previously stored in the PDS3 catalog files are referenced by unique PDS logical identifiers that are included in the document collection inventory of this bundle or in the Dawn mission bundle LID=urn:nasa:pds:dawn-mission. This bundle also includes 2 new gravity field products, JGDWN_VES26J_SHA, in the SHADR collection and JGDWN_VES26J_SHB in the SHBDR collection. These products were not in the original PDS3 data set and but has been added in this bundle in 2025. Errata ====== An errata file (errata.txt) has been included that describes any known errors or deficiencies in the data collections within this bundle.. If more issues are discovered, they will be noted in this file. Every effort has been made to insure that the data are of the best quality available. However, users are encouraged to verify the correctness of the data prior to submitting any publications or other work based on these data and report any issues to PDS/Small Bodies Node.
