PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT INTERCHANGE_FORMAT = ASCII PUBLICATION_DATE = 2000-09-08 NOTE = "I-Kernel Information" END_OBJECT = TEXT END General information about SPICE I-kernels ========================================= In the SPICE system, I-kernels describe how an instrument is mounted to the instrument platform. I-kernels may also contain instrument field-of-view specifications, principal axes specifications, etc. The I-kernel mounting alignment, platform orientation, along with knowledge of the spacecraft position (SP kernel) and instrument pointing (C kernel), allows the user to use SPICELIB to calculate the pointing of instruments. The data contained in I-kernel files can be accessed and manipulated by a collection of FORTRAN 77 subroutines which are part of the SPICELIB library. It is used in conjunction with other data. The SPICELIB subroutines can be integrated into user application programs. The SPICE system toolkit for a number of computer platforms or information regarding how it can be obtained is located in the SOFTWARE subdirectory of the main directory of this dataset. Refer to the KERNEL.REQ document provided with the toolkit or available from the NAIF Node of PDS if SPICE toolkit is not included with this data set to get more information on how to access I-kernel data. I-kernels provided on this volume ===================================== The following NEAR I-Kernel files are provided on this volume (only name portion of the file name is shown on the right; the extension of all file names is ".TI"): MAG12.TI Magnetometer IK file containing instrument mounting alignment and geometry parameters. MSI15.TI Multi-Spectral Imager (MOC) IK file containing instrument mounting alignment, FOV and optics geometry parameters. NLR04.TI NEAR Laser Rangefinder (NLR) IK file containing instrument mounting alignment and FOV geometry parameters. NIS14.TI NEAR Imaging Spectrometer (NIS) IK file containing instrument mounting alignment, FOV and optics geometry parameters. This file also contains TES Frame definitions. XRS12.TI,GRS12.TI X-Ray Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (XGRS) IK files containing instrument mounting alignment, FOV and optics geometry parameters. All IK files provided in this data set contain actual data. Kernel File Details =================== The most detailed description of the data in an IK file is provided in metadata included inside the description area of the file. This information can be viewed using any text editor program. Contact Information =================== For NEAR specific information, contact: NEAR Science Data Center Howard W.
