This document provides an overview of these volumes of the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) NIS Calibrated Data Set, including a summary of the volumes' contents. The NEAR Science Data Center (SDC) archives NEAR calibrated science data to the Small Bodies Node (SBN) of the Planetary Data System (PDS). SDC provided volumes NNEROS_2001 and NNEROS_2002 as part of the NEAR level 2 data set delivery. SBN reviewed these volumes and determined that the following revisions and new products were needed to facilitate data retrieval and analysis: 1) The NNEROS_2003 volume contains a new, PDS-generated version of the original NIS (Nixel) database found on volume NNEROS_2001. The original MET_HI_WORD and MET_LO_WORD columns were were replaced with the calculated MET, 2) an offset was added to the raw data numbers for RAW_GE_DATA and RAW_INGASS_DATA so that all values would be positive, and 3) the original FITS header was modified to include a FITS-compliant binary table extension. 2) The spectra in the PDS-revised NIS (Nixel) database located on volume NNEROS_2003 were split and grouped by UTC (observation) date and NIS mission subphase: a) The NNEROS_2004 volume contains spectra grouped by UTC (observation) date. One FITS binary table was created for each UTC date. b) The NNEROS_2005 volume contains spectra grouped by NIS mission subphase. One FITS binary table was created for each subphase. Volume Format ============= These volumes have been formatted according to the ISO-9660 level 2 Interchange Standard. These volumes do not contain any Extended Attribute Records (XAR). Thus, some VAX/VMS users may have problems accessing files on these volumes. File Formats ============ The data files are presented in both the PDS and FITS form. All document files and most labels contain an 80-byte fixed length record, with a carriage return (ASCII 13) and line feed (ASCII 10) as the 79th and 80th byte respectively. This allows the files to be read by MS-DOS/Windows, Unix, and VMS operating systems. All the tabular files in the INDEX and DOCUMENT directory are formatted according to PDS standards. It should be noted that the index tables are formatted so that they may be read directly into many database management systems. All fields are separated by commas, and character fields are inclosed in double quotes ("). The calibration files are ASCII tables with detached PDS labels. Volume Contents =============== Files on these volumes are organized into sets of subdirectories below the top-level directories. The following table shows the structure of these directories. NIS-specific phases divide major mission "eras," e.g., A = initial cruise, B= Earth Swingby, etc. Subphases group a set of related observation sequences together, and allow easy distinction between observations close in time, but with different targets, sequence parameters, or scientific objectives. The mission elasped time, MET, corresponds to the first spacecraft 1-Hz pulse after the start of the first second of integration of the first spectrum of the sequence, i.e., 1 second after the actual start of the integration. The MET is defined as number of seconds since launch at UT February 17 1996 20:43:28.78. See Section 6.2 of Izenberg et al. (2000) for a detailed explanation of relative timing of spectrum acquisition and the spacecraft pulse. MET range shows inclusive but not exact bounding times for the sequences in the given subphase. * Number represents MSI observation number. Ex: Light Curve "3" is the first NIS light curve, but the 3rd MSI light curve. ** RA = Ride Along with another instrument. *** Early Daily globals and MSRots have bad command sequences that cause lost and/or contaminated darks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Whom to Contact for Information =============================== NEAR Science Data Center: Douglas B.
