The NEAR Science Data Center (SDC) archives NEAR uncalibrated science data to the Small Bodies Node (SBN) of the Planetary Data System (PDS), as specified in the NEAR Project Archive Generation, Validation and Transfer Plan (February 1998). NEAR data sets contain data from only one instrument and one mission phase. Mission phases for data sets are defined in the table below. Each data set contains the data from a range of days and all supporting directories. The data sets may span multiple volumes. Only the first volume in the set contains the /DOCUMENT directory. The GEOMETRY data containing the SPICE ephemerides, attitude and other files are delivered in a separate data set covering the same phase. This data set is a part of the NEAR level 1b data set delivery as described by the NEAR PDS Data Archive Plan. The Plan also describes the higher level data products, which will become separate PDS data sets. The February 1998 Plan document is in the DOCUMENT subdirectory of this data set, in the file PDSARCHIVEPLAN, in text (.TXT) and rich text (.RTF) formats. The included plan is dated February 1998. It is expected to be updated with final definitions of higher level products. The revised plan will be included in later time periods of this data set. Volume Format ============= This volume has been formatted according to the ISO-9660 level 2 Interchange Standard. This volume does not contain any Extended Attribute Records (XAR). Thus, some VAX/VMS users may have problems accessing files on this volume. File Formats ============ The data files are presented in both the PDS and FITS form. In the latter case, a FITS to PDS translator program (F2P) has been used to create the detached PDS labels for each corresponding FITS file. All document files and most labels contain an 80-byte fixed length record, with a carriage return (ASCII 13) and line feed (ASCII 10) as the 79th and 80th byte respectively. This allows the files to be read by MS-DOS/Windows, Unix, and VMS operating systems. All the tabular files in the INDEX and DOCUMENT directory are formatted according to PDS standards. It should be noted that the index tables are formatted so that they may be read directly into many database management systems. All fields are separated by commas, and character fields are inclosed in double quotes ("). Volume Contents =============== Files on this volume are organized into a set of subdirectories below the top-level directory. The following table shows the structure of these directories. See the *INFO.TXT files in each directory in each directory for specific information on the files in the directory. Volume 1 directory structure: |-AAREADME.TXT The text version of the AAREADME file. |-ERRATA.TXT Text information describing data errors/anomalies. |-VOLDESC.CAT Description of the contents of this volume. |-CATALOG-- |-DATA----- | | |-INSTRUMENT-|-CALPAPER--- |-DOCUMENT-| | |-MISSION----|-OVERVIEW--- | |-TECHDIGEST- |-EXTRAS--- |-GEOMETRY- |-INDEX---- Volume 2-n directory structure |-DATA----- |-EXTRAS--- |-INDEX---- Directory Name Description ----------------------------- CATALOG Templates for the mission, instrument host, instrument, and data set. DATA Instrument FITS data files and data labels. The data file parameter defitions are in the /DOCUMENT/INSTRUMENT/NISDEFINITIONS.TXT file. DOCUMENT Documentation of the instrument and SPICE in ASCII text, PostScript, and PDF format. Documentation of the NEAR mission including an overview in ASCII text, PostScript, MS/Word, and PDF format. Articles from the Johns Hopkins APL Technical Digest for the NEAR mission in PDF format. The instrument subdirectory contains documentation describing the instrument and the calibration of instrument data. EXTRAS The extras/ folder contains all of the raw NIS data in the format used by the NEAR MSI/NIS team during the orbital mission. These data are 2-D FITS format files containing raw NIS data and ancillary housekeeping information for each spectrum. Consult /EXTRAS/EXTRINFO.TXT for more details. GEOMETRY This directory contains only a GEOMINFO.TXT file. A separate GEOMETRY volume contains all of the SPICE kernels in text transfer format for the mission phase and the supporting documentation.
