END_OBJECT = TEXT END BROWSE Directory Contents The BROWSE directory has a structure identical to the data directories on this CD. Each lowest level directory contains GIF formatted versions of the PDS archive images in the corresponding data directory; not every data file has a browse image. Each collection of 1 GIF image, which may contain up to 54 browse images, has a PDS label. Information About the NEAR Image Browser The files in this directory are a series of GIF files that provide a simple method for browsing through the NEAR MSI image archive. The system is designed to be viewable by many WWW browsers. The browse subdirectory has "Thumbnail" images of reduced size from the MSI science team image observation pages. The /BROWSE subdirectories contain pages of summary images. There is one subdirectory for each day in the mission phase, is named / (i.e. 2000/012 for January 12th). Within the year-day subdirectories are GIF files, containing one page per file, of up to 54 "thumbnail," reduced-size, geometrically rectified images scaled in brightness from the minimum to maximum value in the image. This provides at a glance an overview of the images taken on that day. The name of these files is used to group imaging activities within a day. For example, pages of thumbnails for Optical Navigation Images are named *OpNav_pg1.gif, star calibration named *StarCal_pg1.gif and planned imaging sequences (Seq*.gif). The MSI planning spreadsheets, found in /DOCUMENT/INSTRUMENT list the planned activities in the day.
