           Content description of INDEX directory                             
                                                                              
This directory contains indices into the GRS data.  During the                
reorganization of CD volumes into logical volumes, it was discovered that     
the index into individual observations, extracted from the binary files,      
was missing for the fourth CD volume in the series.  The indices from         
the other volumes are included in the "volume*"  subdirectories.  The         
indices have not been edited, so the VOLUME_ID field in these files still     
reflects the original volume IDs.

This directory contains two types of index files.                             
                                                                              
The first type provides a file manifest for all PDS-labelled data products    
on the disk.  These files reference the PDS labels only (note that there is   
one label per data product) and provide basic parameters for each data file   
as a whole.                                                                   
                                                                              
The second type provides a science index into the individual records in       
each data file.  Cumulative science indices are also provided.  The           
cumulative indices were created by simple concatenation of the individual     
volume indices.                                                               
                                                                              
Each index is provided with a PDS label with the same file name but an        
extension of ".lbl" rather than ".tab", which describes the contents of       
the index in detail.  In the case of the science indices, consult the         
accompanying documentation (in the "document/instrument" subdirectory)        
for definitions of the file keywords included in the index tables.
