PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM ^TEXT = "AAREADME.TXT" OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2017-08-25 NOTE = "AAREADME.TXT describes this volume." END_OBJECT = TEXT END Volume DWNXVIR_I1B Dawn VIR IR Calib Level-1B (RDR) Cruise Archive ============================================================================== Brief Disk Description ============================================================================== This volume contains the Dawn VIR IR calibrated level-1B (RDR) cubes from all of the Dawn cruise phases (Initial Checkout [ICO], Earth-Mars Cruise [EMC], Mars-Vesta Cruise [MVC], and Vesta-Ceres Cruise [VCC]). NOTE: Reading the Science Plan (located in the /DOCUMENT/SCIENCE_PLAN directory) is critical to the understanding of the Vesta observations and science objectives. Other critical documentation in the DOCUMENT directory include the volume SIS and calibration procedure. These data have been decompressed, decoded, and formatted into scientifically useful data structures from the original raw telemetry packets. These products, along with their required PDS documentation, form the level-1a data sets(EDRs). The calibration was then applied to the EDR data set to produce these RDR data. All data files are stored in the 'DATA' branch of the directory tree. The data are organized into subdirectories by phase and activity. DATA subdirectories are named according to the convention: yyyymmdd_nnnnn where: yyyymmdd = phase/activity start date nnnnn = phase/activity name A brief overview of the mission phases and activities (including the start times and names used in the DATA subdirectories is provided in the 'Dawn Science Observations' table below. The data on this volume include calibrated data CUBEs (3D-array), 'quality cubes', and raw housekeeping data tables. The data CUBEs are named according to the convention: VIR_sss_ll_v_sctime_z, where: 'VIR' = literal sss = sensor ('IR' or 'VIS') ll = processing level ('1A' or '1B') v = clock reset number sctime = the integral portion of the SC_CLK_START_COUNT z = data file version The file extension for the data CUBEs is '.QUB'. Quality cubes are likewise stored as CUBEs ('.QUB' file extension), and contain information relevant to the calibration process. File naming for the quality cubes is: VIR_sss_ll_v_sctime_QQ_z where the 'QQ' is literal and the other elements are identical to those in the CUBE files. The housekeeping data are stored in ASCII tables ('.TAB' file extension). File naming for the housekeeping files is: VIR_sss_ll_v_sctime_HK_z where the 'HK' is literal and the other elements are identical to those in the CUBE files. All three types of data files are accompanied by PDS label files ('.LBL' file extension), which provide information on the temporal, geometrical, and instrumental conditions under which the data were taken. These data all use the same calibration files and procedures that were used in the processing of the Vesta data set. The calibration procedure can be found on the PDS volume DWNVVIR_I1B in the DOCUMENT/VIR_CALIBRATION directory and the underlying calibration tables are found on the same volume in the CALIB directory. The calibration tables and document are associated with PDS data set id "DAWN-A-VIR-3-RDR-IR-VESTA-SPECTRA-V1.0". SPICE kernels are archived by the NAIF Node of the PDS. This volume contains a collection of SPICE metakernel (MK) files in the GEOMETRY directory. These MKs contain a list SPICE kernels that were used in processing the VIR data products, and are referenced in the data product labels. Users of these data are encouraged to acknowledge both the PDS and the principal investigators of the instruments whose data are used in analysis in all publications. ============================================================================== Volume Set Information ============================================================================== This volume is part of the VIR calibrated level-1B RDR data volume set. This volume set includes the following volumes: Volume ID Description -------------------------------------------------------- DWNXVIR_I1B Dawn VIR-IR L1-B RDR cruise data DWNXVIR_V1B Dawn VIR-VIS L1-B RDR cruise data DWNVVIR_I1B Dawn VIR-IR L1-B RDR Vesta data DWNVVIR_V1B Dawn VIR-VIS L1-B RDR Vesta data DWNCVIR_I1B Dawn VIR-IR L1-B RDR Ceres data DWNCVIR_V1B Dawn VIR-VIS L1-B RDR Ceres data ============================================================================== Mission Facts ============================================================================== The 'Dawn Science Observations' table below provides a list of scientific observations made by the Dawn instruments. It includes the observation start date, the ID of the phase in which it occurred, the activity name, and a brief description. The following table contains a listing of VIR cruise calibrations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dawn Cruise Calibration Observations ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Start Mission Activity Activity Date Phase Name Description ========================================================================= 2017-09-28 ICO ICO Initial Checkout ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2007-10-17 ICO FUNC VIR Functional Test 2007-12-11 ICO STAR_CAL 33 IR & VIS cubes centered on Arcturus ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2008-01-19 EMC EMC Earth-Mars Cruise ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2008-04-07 EMC CAL Full scan/slew cubes of Canopus & Mars ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2009-03-23 MVC MVC Mars-Vesta Cruise ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2009-12-03 MVC GEOCAL Scan/slew cubes of Canopus (IR) to compute mounting geometry - unsuccessful 2010-04-26 MVC GEOCAL Scan/slew cubes of Canopus (IR) to compute mounting geometry - unsuccessful 2010-05-10 MVC MMConfig 6Gb memory configuration test 2010-07-21 MVC GEOCAL Full scan/slew cubes of Canopus (IR) to compute mounting geometry - succeeded 2011-03-15 MVC FUNC Pre-Vesta VIR Functional Test -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2012-09-10 VCC VCC Vesta-Ceres Cruise -------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are no calibrated data from the Vesta-Ceres cruise phase. Activities during this phase did not open the cover. There are raw (EDR) versions of the check-out data. Functional checkouts were performed on 2012-352, 2013-320, and 2014-174. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first two geometric calibrations failed to observe Canopus which was being used to determine the sensor alignments, because the cubes acquired were not large enough. The combination of ephemeris and pointing errors were larger than anticipated at the time when the observations were designed. The cube size was increased for the final observation which was successful. ============================================================================== File Formats ============================================================================== The data cube files on this volume are binary. The housekeeping (HK) data files are ASCII tables. Both the binary cubes and ASCII HK data have detached PDS labels. The PDS label is an ASCII file containing information describing spacecraft, target, and observation parameters characterizing the associated data file. A data set description, instrument description, and other PDS documents are in .CAT files in the /CATALOG directory. In more recent versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system the .CAT by default is reserved as 'Security Catalog.' The .CAT files contained in this volume are ASCII text files, and can be read by any form of text editor. To make Windows open files with this name extension as text files right click the .CAT file, select with and choose a text editor to open the file. Additional documentation is located in the DOCUMENT directory. ============================================================================== Errata ============================================================================== Every effort has been made to assure that the data and documentation are of the best possible quality. However, mistakes are inevitable. There is a file called ERRATA.TXT found at the root level of this volume which contains a list of known deficiencies or caveats associated with data on this volume at the time this volume was produced. ============================================================================== Volume Contents and Structure ============================================================================== This section describes the volume structure and naming conventions.
