END_OBJECT = TEXT END Volume DWNMGRD_1B Dawn GRaND Calibrated RDR (NASA Level-1B) Mars Gravity Assist Archive ============================================================================== Brief Disk Description ============================================================================== This volume contains data from the Dawn GRaND calibrated RDR (NASA level-1b) Mars flyby dataset. The GRaND RDR are a time-ordered collection of corrected gamma ray and neutron counting data and calibrated pulse height spectra acquired by GRaND during all phases of the Dawn mission. This data set is specific to Mars Gravity Assist (MGA), and includes data acquired during Mars approach, flyby, and departure. The Reduced Data Record (RDR) data set is derived from the Experiment Data Records (EDR), consisting of time-series counting rates from which elemental abundances can be determined. Ancillary ephemeris and pointing data needed for analysis and mapping of the time series data are included in the data set. All data are stored in the 'DATA' branch of the directory tree. In addition to the data files, ancillary information is stored in a separate PDS label (.LBL) file. Users of these data are encouraged to acknowledge both the PDS and the principal investigators of the instruments whose data is used in analysis in all publications. ============================================================================== Volume Set Information ============================================================================== This volume is part of the GRaND calibrated RDR (level-1B) volume set. This volume set includes the following volumes: Volume ID Description ------------------------------------------------------- DWNXGRD_1B Dawn GRaND RDR (L-1B) calibrated cruise time series data DWNMGRD_1B Dawn GRaND RDR (L-1B) Mars flyby calibrated time series DWNVGRD_1B Dawn GRaND RDR (L-1B) Vesta calibrated time series DWNCGRD_1B Dawn GRaND RDR (L-1B) Ceres calibrated time series ============================================================================== Mission Facts ============================================================================== The 'Dawn Science Observations' table below provides a list of scientific observations made by the Dawn instruments. It includes the observation start date, the background sequence in which the observation occurred, an abbreviated observation name, and the location of an activity report which describes the observation. The activity report information is given as: VOLUME_ID: DOC DIR/DOC ID where: VOLUME_ID = PDS Volume ID that the report is on (wildcards indicate that the report is located on multiple volumes) DOC DIR = the name of the '/DOCUMENT/ACTIVITY_REPORTS' subdirectory in which the activity report is located DOC ID = the PDS DOCUMENT_ID, and file basename of the activity report ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dawn Science Observations ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ start bkg date seq activity activity report (VOLUME_ID: DOC DIR/DOC ID[1]) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07/289 DC003 GRAND FUNC DWNXGRD_1A: CRUISE/GRAND_CRUISE_OPS 07/290 DC003 VIR FUNC DWNXVIR_*1A: FUNCTIONAL_07290/VID-GAF-TR-077_REV0 07/291 DC003 FC2 FUNC DWNXFC*_1*: ICO/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-268_1D 07/338 DC009 FC2 PERF DWNXFC*_1*: ICO/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-268_1D 07/344 DC010 FC1 FUNC DWNXFC*_1*: ICO/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-268_1D 07/345 DC010 VIR CAL DWNXVIR_*1*: CALIBRATION_07345/VID-GAF-TN-039_REV0 07/346 DC010 FC1 CCD CAL DWNXFC*_1*: ICO/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-268_1D 07/347 DC010 FC2 CAL DWNXFC*_1*: ICO/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-268_1D 08/052 DC013 FC1 PERF DWNXFC*_1*: ICO/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-268_1D 08/053 DC013 FC1 CAL DWNXFC*_1*: ICO/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-268_1D 08/092 DC014 GRAND SCI DWNXGRD_1A: CRUISE/GRAND_CRUISE_OPS 08/094 DC014 FC2 CCD CAL DWNXFC*_1*: CCDCAL_08094/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-287_1_A 08/094 DC014 FC1 CCD CAL DWNXFC*_1*: CCDCAL_08094/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-287_1_A 08/098 DC014 VIR CAL DWNXVIR_*1*: CALIBRATION_08098/VID-GAF-TN-039_REV0 08/239 DC018 FC2 CCD CAL DWNXFC*_1*: CCDCAL_08239/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-286_1- 08/239 DC018 FC1 CCD CAL DWNXFC*_1*: CCDCAL_08239/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-286_1- 09/020 DC022 GRAND SCI N/A [2] 09/061 DC023 GRAND MCA SCI DWNMGRD_1*: MGA_09049/MCA_RESULTS 09/047 DC023 FC2 MCA DWNM*: MGA_09048/MGA_09048.TXT [3] 09/048 DC023 VIR CAL DWNM*: MGA_09048/MGA_09048.TXT [3] 09/078 DC024 GRAND SCI N/A [2] 09/090 DC024 FC2 STRAYLIGHT DWNXFC2_1*: STRAYLIGHT_09090/DA-FC-MPAE-RP-284_D- 09/147 DC026 VIR CAL 09/334 DC034 VIR GEOM CAL 09/334 DC034 GRAND ADJUST ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Wildcard in VOLUME_ID [1] All activity reports are located in the /DOCUMENT/ACTIVITY_REPORTS directory of the volume. The 'DOC DIR' indicates the sub-directory of the ACTIVITY_REPORTS directory that the document is located in. The 'DOC ID' is base name of the document file. [2] Analysis of the GRaND DC022 and DC024 observations is included in the GRaND Data Processing document (DOCUMENT/DATA_PROCESSING/GRD_L1B_BGO_DATA_PROCESSING_V4.). [3] Due a spacecraft safing at Mars, all of the VIR observations, all but a few of the FC2 images were lost. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ============================================================================== File Formats ============================================================================== The data files on this volume are in both ASCII and IEEE binary. Each data file has an detached ASCII header (PDS label). The PDS label contains information describing spacecraft, target, and data record format. A data set description, instrument description, and other PDS documents are in .CAT files in the /CATALOG directory. In more recent versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system the .CAT by default is reserved as 'Security Catalog.' The .CAT files contained in this volume are ASCII text files, and can be read by any form of text editor. To make Windows open files with this name extension as text files, do the following. In Windows Explorer, open the 'Tools' menu and select 'Folder Options'. Select the 'File Types' tab and select 'CAT' from the list. Press 'Change...' and then choose your preferred text editor or viewer. We do not know of any harmful effects this might have on the operating system or other programs, but do not guarantee it will be entirely safe to make this change. If problems occur, the change can be undone in the same 'File Types' window by changing the default application back to 'crypto shell extension'. Additional documentation is generally located in the DOCUMENT directory. ============================================================================== Errata ============================================================================== Every effort has been made to assure that the data and documentation are of the best possible quality. However, mistakes are inevitable. There is a file called ERRATA.TXT found at the root level of this volume which contains a list of known deficiencies or caveats associated with data on this volume at the time this volume was produced. ============================================================================== Volume Contents and Structure ============================================================================== This section describes the volume structure and naming conventions. Below is a tree diagram of the volume, followed by a description of the directory function and key files in each directory.
